US Map Quiz is a geography app for locating all 50 states and recalling capitals. It offers find-the-state and capitals modes with zoomable maps, timed challenges, and progress tracking. Free version includes ads and tricky inset states.
US Map Quiz is a geography app that tests your ability to locate all 50 states on a blank map, match state names to shapes, and recall capitals. It combines timed challenges with zoomable maps, making it a practical drill for students or anyone memorizing U.S. geography. No account setup is needed, so you can start immediately.
I started with the “find the state” mode. A blank U.S. map appears, and the state name sits at the top. Touch the approximate area, and if you're wrong, the correct border flashes briefly. That sounds simple, but the zoom feature changes everything. Pinch to enlarge the Northeast, and you'll see how close Rhode Island and Massachusetts really are.
The capitals section is separate from the map quiz. It shows a state silhouette and four capital options. Once you answer, the app moves on immediately, so there is no time to study the map. That felt frustrating at first, but it forces you to remember through retrieval. After a few rounds of US Map Quiz, I saw that connecting a capital to the state's shape works better than alphabetical lists.
The app is free, but it's not ad-free. A banner sits at the bottom, and full-screen ads pop up after every few answers. In the timed mode, that can break your rhythm. Alaska and Hawaii also sit in small inset boxes, so tapping them on a phone is tricky, and there's no option to hide those states. Those flaws are noticeable, though not deal-breakers.
Skip the timed mode until you score around 80 percent in the relaxed mode. The timer adds pressure, and you'll start making silly taps near the borders. I also recommend using the zoom on the West Coast states; Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho look similar when they're small. The state index below the map lists which states you still haven't found, so you can track your progress without losing your place. That index is easy to miss if you don't scroll down on the main screen.
